Counsel On Call Opens Nashville Discovery Center

Centralized Operation Will Help Clients With Discovery, Document Review in Litigation

NASHVILLE, TENN. | The Counsel On Call Discovery Center in Nashville, Tenn., is open and fully operational.

With the capacity to host approximately 100 attorneys in a group or in pods, the Discovery Center will support Counsel On Call's litigation and discovery projects for corporate legal departments and law firms in Tennessee and around the country.

"The electronic discovery segment of our business has grown to the point that we needed another significant, dedicated space," said Richard Stout, senior attorney and director of Counsel On Call's E-Discovery Division, who oversees and now works out of the Discovery Center. "This will help us create even more efficiencies in how we coordinate our attorney teams and deliver our services, which ultimately saves our clients even more time and money."

Counsel On Call's Discovery Center has been in development for two years. With floor-to-ceiling windows, sectioned spaces for client-dedicated attorney teams, technologically advanced meeting space, social space, a kitchen, and dual computer monitors for every attorney, the Center represents Stout's vision for how teams can function productively in a positive, professional environment.

"We achieve successful results for our clients because we address every stage of the discovery process in great detail, and this Discovery Center is no different," he said. "We want our attorneys to be very comfortable in a professional environment and to work side-by-side their fellow client team members. It builds the community our company is all about. The Center will mean positive things for both our attorneys and our clients."

The design of Counsel On Call's Discovery Center is counter to the commonly utilized "cubicle farm" layout many e-discovery vendors deploy. The layout is divided into four separate areas that can be adjusted to fit the size of the teams working in those areas. There are high ceilings and large windows, wide walking areas and ample space between work stations.

Primer on "Discovery" (or "E-Discovery") Work
Discovery is the stage during litigation when a company finds the documents, materials, witnesses, etc., to help support its case or defense. E-Discovery is the universal term used for the physical review of all the electronic documents involved in that process – e-mails, databases, PowerPoints, text messages, social media, etc. As one might imagine, that can be voluminous.

Fifteen years ago, a large discovery matter (then called "document review") might have required attorneys sifting through hundreds of boxes of printed-out memos kept in bankers boxes. Today, everything is electronic and automatically stored on servers, so the volume of data available to review has increased exponentially.

Even just three or four years ago, a medium-sized e-discovery matter might have been 50 gigabytes, or 2,500,000 electronic documents (the equivalent of 1,000 bankers boxes). Today, a matter might be closer to 1 terabyte (TB), or 50,000,000 documents. There is an entire industry of technology companies that have products that help cull these data sets, so in reality that 1 TB set might only have 1,000,000 documents remaining for attorneys to review after the processing stage is complete. But depending on deadlines, it can take dozens, if not hundreds, of attorneys to handle the culling and document review process, as the average Fortune 1000 company has between 190 terabytes to 1 petabyte (1 million GB) of data on its servers.

That’s a big reason why Counsel On Call – with billing rates that are typically one-quarter that of a law firm – is often called for e-discovery matters. Using experienced attorneys, Counsel On Call saves corporations millions of dollars on this work, understands how technology can create dramatic efficiencies, and utilizes strict project management protocols, among other initiatives.
