How many attorneys work with Counsel On Call?
This is a number that fluctuates every week depending on the assignments we're working on. Over the course of a month, we might have 250 to 300 people working. Since we opened our doors in 2000, we've had approximately 900 attorneys and paralegals work with our company.
Who are your clients?
We have a good mix of law firm and corporate legal department clients. Our law firm clients range from solo practitioners to some of the largest firms in the world. Our legal department clients include small, up-and-coming companies to Fortune 50 companies and international conglomerates. We're fortunate that more than 60 of our clients have been with us for more than four years.
What kinds of credentials and experience do you require of your attorneys?
This is one of the ways we differentiate ourselves. In general, an attorney working with our company has three or more years of experience with a large law firm or corporate legal department and graduated in the top 30 percent from a top-three-tier law school. Many of our attorneys have much more experience or went to a top law school (or both). These are not attorneys who can't find work; in fact, they are the types of people our clients would consider hiring on a permanent basis.
We have an extensive interview and screening process that allows us to get to know our attorneys and make decisions on whether
an attorney can (or should) work with our company
on a case-by-case basis. For instance, an attorney might not have graduated from a top-50 law school, but might have been in the top 5 percent of his class, on Law Review for two years and have worked for five years with a great law firm. All of those factors help us evaluate whether he/she is a talented attorney and someone our clients would want to work with.
Are you opening more offices?
In 2006, our Chicago office opened; in 2007, it was Charlotte; in 2008, our new Boston office hit the ground running. We're currently conducting our due diligence on several cities we've identified as growth markets. What is the male/female ratio of attorneys working with Counsel On Call?
A lot of people have the misconception that working on an assignment basis is simply something for new mothers and women coming back to work. Nothing could be further from the truth. We have almost as many male attorneys and paralegals working with our company as female. Finding work/life balance is not a gender-specific issue.
