Clay probably wins the company award for the “Most Enviable Life For A Football Fan.”

It's difficult to top his typical weekend schedule during the fall. As an online columnist for CBS Sports and author of Dixieland Delight: A Football Season On the Road In The Southeastern Conference, Clay travels to SEC cities, signs books, mingles with the crowd from the local university, attends the game as a fan of SEC football, and writes about his experiences.

“Growing up in the South, football is such a part of the fabric of the community,” said Clay, 28, a native of Nashville, Tenn. “So to get an opportunity to write about something I love is pretty exciting.”

After getting his law degree from Vanderbilt University, Clay signed on with a Washington D.C.-based firm, where his work took him to St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, a hub of financial activity for many of his Fortune 100 clients. When he was presented with the opportunity with CBS Sports (formerly CBSSportsline.com), however, he knew he couldn't pass it up. At the same time, he wanted to continue practicing law — and needed to for financial reasons.

“Knowing what I wanted to do with the column and my writing, the traditional practice of law wasn't going to work,” he said. “Going into the managing partner's office at 2 p.m. on a Friday and saying, ‘Well, I'm outta here — gotta go to Gainesville for the game' wasn't going to fly. I needed to find something a lot more flexible.”

How Our Attorneys Can Help

Clay

Clay now schedules his work around his writing and travel schedule. In a typical week, he posts three columns per week on CBS Sports.com, helps with a legal investigation or short-term assignment on one or two days, then heads to a game and a book signing event on the weekend. When things wind down with the book tour, he'll be able to ramp up his legal work if needed. By then, of course, he'll probably be working on his next book.

“The ironic thing is that I really enjoy practicing law more now than I did when I was doing it fulltime,” he said. “Counsel On Call allows me to keep my skills fresh, and I truly like my work. My schedule fluctuates so much that it's nice to know I can work whenever I need to or am available. The people at Counsel On Call really go out of their way to find the right kinds of assignments for me.”

It might seem like a hectic schedule for Clay, but he gets to spend a lot of time with his wife and recently started teaching a creative writing class at Vanderbilt.

“It's great. I'm getting to do all the things I really enjoy doing, and obviously flexibility is key for me. There's no way I could do all of this without Counsel On Call.”
